SIXTH STREET COMMUNITY SYNAGOGUE’S NEW RABBI INSTALLATION CELEBRATION

-- RABBI GREG WALL PERFORMS ALONGSIDE MUSICAL SUPERSTARS OCTOBER 31, 2009 --

On October 31, 2009, Rabbi Greg Wall will be officially installed as the new rabbi of the historic Sixth Street Community Synagogue. To celebrate his new position, he will perform alongside Later Prophets (Greg Wall, Shai Bachar, Dave Richards, Aaron Alexander), Klezmerfest (Wall, Alexander, Zev Zions, Jordan Hirsch, Brian Glassman), Unity Orchestra (Wall, Alexander, Bachar, Fima Ephron, Hasan Bakr, Alioune Faye, members of Hasidic New Wave (Wall, Alexander, Ephron); and Gary Lucas, with other special guests to be announced.

The event will follow a shabbaton weekend launching the shul's weekly Shabbat dinners. For more information click here.

A leading figure in the downtown music scene, Greg Wall was ordained in 2006 and may well be the only recording and touring jazz musician who is also a rabbi.  He credits John Coltrane for igniting his interest in blending spiritual leanings with jazz.

"When it comes to music as a spiritual outlet, Coltrane is the model. His written prayer in the sleeve of A LOVE SUPREME made it explicit. This was the synthesis I was looking for."

Wall's adventurous and inclusive sonic universe and rich saxophone and clarinet playing can be heard with such acclaimed bands as Hasidic New Wave, the quintet that he co-leads with Frank London; Greg Wall'sUnity Orchestra, a pan cultural ensemble featuring eight musicians from five continents; Klezmerfest, an outstanding klezmer band in the great Eastern European tradition; and Greg Wall's Later Prophets whose most recent CD "HA'OROT: The Lights of Rav Kook" (May 2009, Tzadik) has earned wide acclaim for its passionate and inspiring blend of modern jazz and timeless texts.  His work is "a surprising multicultural collision worthy of Bill Laswell or Kip Hanrahan at their best," noted Jon Andrews in DownBeat.
